Family Lives - Free Confidential Helpline

Family Lives - Summer Childcare Issues

Advice and support from Family Lives, a charity which works around the clock, transforming the lives of families, supporting parents and making happier relationships, happier families and a stronger society.

Summer Childcare Issues

According to research by the national childcare charity Daycare Trust, finding affordable childcare during the summer break is one of the biggest headaches for parents. Yet because of the lack of places and the high cost, most parents don’t actually organise their summer childcare until a few weeks beforehand. The costs and shortage of places can be overwhelming, often meaning parents end up taking unpaid leave and using the bulk of annual holiday entitlement to be with the kids.

With family budgets being squeezed by the effects of the recession, our advice may help ease the burden.

NSPCC: Children & Young People Online Safety

Children and young people spend a lot of time online – it can be a great way for them to socialise, explore and have fun. But children do also face risks like cyberbullying or seeing content that's inappropriate.

The NSPCC has teamed up with O2 to give you everything you need to know about keeping children safe online.

Whether you're unsure about what happens online or are up to speed with new technology, it's important that you talk to your child about staying safe.

It may feel daunting, but you don't need to be an expert on the internet. Understanding what children do online and the risks they face will help you keep your child safe online.

Give Us Time - The Charity that Supports Military Families

You need to get away sometimes. Life is stressful: concerns at work, bills to pay, phone calls to make. Sometimes we need to talk to our spouse about the problems we face. But what if your spouse is away for most of the year and communicating is difficult? What if they are in a situation where they may never come back? Or, if they do, could return with physical or psychological wounds?

That is the situation that many people with significant others in the military have to face. An operational tour can last from three to six months, but in some cases people in the military have to spend most of the year away from their families.

Life at home goes on without them. Children grow up, spouses go through life experiences without their partner. Often, by the time they come home, the family has grown apart and the family dynamic has changed.

Are You Driving in France? New Rules on Vehicle Emissions

If you're planning to drive to or through France via Paris, Lyon or Grenoble, beware, new rules mean you're likely to need to display a vehicle emissions sticker on your windscreen, while older cars could be banned altogether from certain areas at certain times.

The three French cities have introduced the 'Crit'Air' scheme, which is designed to curb pollution and requires most vehicles driving within designated 'environmental zones' to display a window sticker (known as a vignette).

The stickers cost €4.80 (around £4.13), including postage to the UK. There are six categories of sticker, which are colour-coded according to how much vehicles pollute and range from the cleanest (Crit'Air 1), for electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles, to the most polluting (Crit'Air 6).
